WHY CHILDREN SHOULD LEARN ENGLISH

It is well known that children absorb language better at an early age. However, it is also true that developing children have a capacity to retain vast amounts of information and to acquire skills at a staggering pace. It makes sense then to start learning a new language at this critical period. If a language is introduced at this age with native speakers as models (the teachers), children are more likely to develop a near native ability in the language. This, in turn, develops confidence in using the language.

Very young children exposed to English are involved in an acquisition process rather than a learning process. In other words, in the early stages the children will recognise words and react to them rather than be expected to try and memorise them.

WHY THE FLIT APPROACH IS DIFFERENT

Thai children find it difficult to reach an acceptable level of English despite learning it from an early age. The main reason for this is the way they are introduced to English. The method used is very traditional; in other words, the focus is on grammar analysis, memorising lists of vocabulary (mostly out of context) and learners are not using the language for any real purpose. The children find it difficult, boring and lose interest in English.

The Fun Language method of learning is based on a communicative approach, in other words there are no textbooks required. Children learn through verbal and physical participation with the native English speaking teachers. In the classroom, children can become acquainted with English as they absorb pronunciation and vocabulary without inhibition or self-consciousness.

CAMBRIDGE YOUNG LEARNERS EXAMS

Cambridge ESOL has developed a special system of tests designed to get children of primary school age and upwards on the path to learning English. After planning our own curriculum in line with the Cambridge Young Learner Exams, Fun Language became an authorised Sub-Centre for the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. We not only aim to prepare our students to sit for the exams, but also provide exam preparation tuition for candidates. There are three levels for children to work through, Starters, Movers and Flyers, with Starters being the first, aimed at young children with very basic skills.
